JOHN HARINGTON
JOHN HARINGTON
1560-1612
John Harington invented the first flushing toilet and is related to actor Kit Harington
John Harington was an English courtier as well as Queen Elizabeth I’s godson (she had 102 godchildren). He was best known for inventing the first flushing toilet which was called the Ajax (“jakes”). The first flushing toilet was installed at his home in Kelston.
Harington was a prominent figure at the royal court and was known for speaking his mind and getting banished from court numerous times for his controversial writing. One time he was banished because the Queen found his writing to be too racy and another time he wrote about Robert Dudley, who was the Queen’s favourite. Even though Harington could fuel the Queen’s anger he continued to remain in favour at court until her death.
Harington wasn’t happy at the court of King James I, he disliked how both men and women would often be drunk. In 1606, Sir Robert Cecil (William Cecil’s son) attempted to put on a masque for King Christian IV of Denmark who was visiting. Harington noted that the play was a disaster as the performers were too drunk to even stand up and many fell over.
In 2017, Kit Harington who played Jon Snow on Game of Thrones revealed that he is related to Harington. Kit has said, "[John Harrington] also wrote the queen a lot of bad poetry. I've inherited the bad poetry genes, but not the inventor genes.”
It is believed that the term ‘the john’ was used long before John Harington invented the flushing toilet.

The Throne of John Harington
Known in the royal court as Queen Elizabeth I‘s “saucy godson”, John Harington is remembered for his writing, particularly the first description of a flush toilet installed in his house at Kelston. Born in London but baptised in Somerset on 4th August 1560, Harington was the son of poet John Harington of Stepney (d. 1582) and his second wife Isabella Markham (1527-79), a gentlewoman of Elizabeth…

A Ghost Story for Christmas: Lot No. 249 (BBC, 2023)
"Well, I've given you my opinion. I stand flat-footed upon the ground and there I must remain. The world is big enough for us; no ghosts need apply."
#a ghost story for christmas#lot no. 249#horror tv#single play#2023#bbc#new tv#arthur conan doyle#mark gatiss#kit harington#freddie fox#colin ryan#john heffernan#andrew horton#jonathan rigby#james swanton#jon dear#blair mowat#watched immediately after having watched the '74 adaptation of The Treasure of Abbot Thomas‚ which I suspect didn't help my#reception of this new ghost story. I'm very grateful that Gatiss has been able (thus far; he's been quite public about what a struggle it#is to secure the funding for this kind of niche project) to keep the xmassy bbc ghost story tradition alive‚ and like any series of self#contained plays or anthology‚ there will always be stronger and weaker efforts. alas.. this is not‚ for me‚ one of the better of the new#batch of festive scares. for one thing‚ it leans strongly into what i would identify as Gatiss' chief weakness in comparison to the#Gordon Clark ghost stories: his commitment to putting the scares onscreen‚ where LGC rightly (imho oc) identified that it's much scarier#when you DON'T see the terrible thing. a captured glance‚ a distant image‚ a blurred something on the periphery and your mind filling#in the blanks; infinitely scarier than Gatiss' insistence on showing the monster‚ even having it roar down the camera‚ attempted jumpscares#that simply don't work like subtle‚ building dread do. i don't want to bag on him‚ but this isn't the strongest story to begin with and#combined with the hammer subtle modern horror sensibility of the direction it all ends up being... a little silly. i was enjoying Kit's#performance but the very ending was just farcical. for me. ymmv of course. i still hope he keeps making these anyway#and this one is pretty campy so it has that going for it. but maybe back to m.r. James next time eh Mark?

Note: Even though he was on the list, I skipped over Rob Wiethoff. While it’d be cool to have the original VA reprise the role, Rob is apparently semi-retired from acting. Also, knowing Hollywood, he’d probably just have a cameo/minor role as a different character anyways, especially since he doesn’t look like John Marston and the studio would want an A/B-list actor in the role. Same thing happened with Troy and Ashley in HBO’s “The Last of Us”.

Lot No 249 — introducing a Christmas ghost story
Lot No 249 — introducing a Christmas ghost story
The BBC has interviews with the cast / creators of Christmas ghost story Lot No 249. It’s another Mark Gatiss adaptation, this time an Arthur Conan Doyle tale. 1881. Old College, Oxford plays host to three very different young academics: Abercrombie Smith, a model of Victorian manhood, clean of limb and sound of mind; Monkhouse Lee, a delicate and unworldly student from Siam; and the strange and…
